Column Generation Approaches to a Robust Airline Crew Pairing Model For Managing Extra Flights

چکیده
The airline crew pairing problem (CPP) is one of the classical problems in airline operations research due to its crucial impact on the cost structure of an airline. Moreover, the complex crew regulations and the large scale of the resulting mathematical programming models have rendered it an academically interesting problem over decades. The CPP is a tactical problem, typically solved over a monthly planning horizon, with the objective of creating a set of crew pairings so that every flight in the schedule is covered, where a crew pairing refers to a sequence of flights operated by a single crew starting and ending at the same crew base. This paper discusses how an airline may hedge against a certain type of operational disruption by incorporating robustness into the pairings generated at the planning level. In particular, we address how a set of extra flights may be added into the flight schedule at the time of operation by modifying the pairings at hand and without delaying or canceling the existing flights in the schedule. We assume that the set of potential extra flights and their associated departure time windows are

Solving a robust airline crew pairing problem with column generation
In this study, we solve a robust version of the airline crew pairing problem. Our concept of robustness was partially shaped during our discussions with small local airlines in Turkey which may have to add a set of extra flights into their schedule at short notice during operation. Thus, robustness in this case is related to the ability of accommodating these extra flights at the time of operat...
متن کاملCockpit Crew Pairing Problem in Airline Scheduling: Shortest Path with Resources Constraints Approach
Increasing competition in the air transport market has intensified active airlines’ efforts to keep their market share by attaching due importance to cost management aimed at reduced final prices. Crew costs are second only to fuel costs on the cost list of airline companies. So, this paper attempts to investigate the cockpit crew pairing problem. The set partitioning problem has been used for ...
متن کاملRobust crew pairing for managing extra flights
A: This paper discusses a modeling approach to robust crew pairing when a set of extra flights is likely to be added to the regular flight schedule. The set of these possible extra flights is known at the planning stage. We demonstrate that these extra flights may be incorporated into the schedule if necessary by modifying the planned crew pairings appropriately and without delaying or c...
متن کاملGeneration Approach to Airline Crew Scheduling
The airline crew scheduling problem deals with the construction of crew rotations in order to cover the flights of a given schedule at minimum cost. The problem involves complex rules for the legality and costs of individual pairings and base constraints for the availability of crews at home bases. A typical instance considers a planning horizon of one month and several thousand flights. We pro...
متن کاملColumn Generation and the Airline Crew Pairing Problem
The cost of ight crews is the second largest operating cost of an airline. Minimizing it is a fundamental problem in airline planning and operations, and one which has leant itself to mathematical optimization. We discuss several recent advances in the methods used to solve these problems. After describing the general approach taken, we discuss a new method which can be used to obtain approxima...
